Scientific Committee workshop: western North Pacific common minke whales

Following a successful workshop to examine extensive new info on population structure, the Scientific Committee today begins a review of minke whales in the western North Pacific.  The process, known as an ‘Implementation Review,’ is expected to take at least two years to complete and aims to assess the numbers and structure of this population.

In the past, population structure has proved difficult to determine for common minke whales in this region. There are several different theories regarding the different sub-populations (or stocks) and it's hoped that additional genetic analyses will help identify more precisely which animals belong to which of the stocks that make up the total population of common minkes in the western North Pacific.

The workshop takes place in Tokyo from 25 Feb - 1 March.
