The IWC co-ordinates and directs a major research programme, POWER (North Pacific Whale and Ecosystem Research). The report of the 3rd research cruise has been submitted to the IWC Scientific Committee, meeting on Jeju Island, Republic of Korea.  Covering an area of the eastern North Pacific that has not been surveyed for approximately 40 years, using a vessel generously donated by Japan, this international collaboration covered over 2,100 nautical miles, sighted 18 different cetacean species and collected over 50 biopsy samples.  Over 170 individual photographic IDs were collected including the rare North Pacific right whale.  Once analysed, these data will contribute to a better understanding of the status of whales in the eastern North Pacific.
