Workshop: Guiana dolphin

Experts from seven countries are gathering in Santos, Brazil, for a workshop on the Guiana dolphin.

There are a number of Guiana populations covering an extensive range, all in western tropical South America.  Found only in shallow coastal estuaries and bays, they are vulnerable to numerous threats, particularly because much of this habitat is also densely populated by humans.

Bycatch in  artisanal gillnets, high levels of contaminant and disease are some of the threats already identified.  The workshop will assess new information on the status of this species, establish a forum for researchers to exchange data, and report their findings to the next meeting of IWC Scientific Committee in 2020.

The workshop takes place from 25-28 November.
