IWC entanglement response training for Norway

IWC entanglement response training has concluded successfully in Sortland, Norway.  Recognizing the opportunity provided through the IWC, and an apparent, recent upward trend in entanglement reports, the Norwegian Fisheries Directorate requested, organized and sponsored a two-day training workshop, with one day in the classroom and one at sea.

This training is also a forum for participants to discuss recent entanglement events and trends, as well as regulatory and supervisory authorities. One unusual and challenging aspect of current entanglements in Norway is that the reports are coming from the Northern region of the country from December to February, when daylight is very short, or even not existent. The darkness, along with cold conditions, present some unique problems for the Norwegian team, and it is hoped that the rest of the Global Network can learn from Norway’s experiences.

The training was supported by the Norwegian Coast Guard, who provided the venue, as well as boats and personnel. The training was provided by the IWC Technical Advisor. The trainees included 16 Fisheries and Coast Guard personnel.
