Publication of Scientific Committee Meeting Report

The annual report of the IWC Scientific Committee is published today.  It contains a comprehensive account of the discussions, conclusions and recommendations of the meeting of the Scientific Committee, which took place over a two week period in April/May in Bled, Slovenia.

The Committee's agenda covered a wide range of issues, from population dynamics, whale stock structures and genetics, to assessment of human impacts on cetaceans, including marine debris, bycatch and ocean noise.  A particular highlight of this year's meeting was the completion of work on the Aboriginal Whaling Management Programme, an extremely complex exercise to provide the most rigorous advice on all scientific aspects of Aboriginal Subsistence Whaling.  This programme of work has taken twenty four years and will provide important support to the Commission's discussions on this subject, starting  at its meeting in September where the six-yearly renewal of Aboriginal Subsistence Whaling catches are on the agenda.
