New IWC Bureau meets in St Lucia, September 2013

The first meeting of the new IWC Bureau took place at the beginning of September.  The Bureau reflects the move from annual to biennial Commission meetings, and the increase and diversification of IWC work.  The new forum is using a combination of meetings and teleconferences to strengthen the co-ordination, delivery and communication of the Commission’s intersessional work programme.

The eight-strong team is led by the Commission’s Chair, Jeannine Compton-Antoine of St Lucia.  In order to ensure the Commission’s workplan is implemented, the team will oversee the progress of more than 30 sub-committees and working groups.  An additional key responsibility of the Bureau will be to undertake planning for the Commission’s next full meeting in September or October of 2014.
