International collaboration on large scale mortalities
and mass strandings of cetaceans.

An IWC workshop on cetacean stranding has concluded successfully in San Francisco, USA.  Biologists, veterinarians and stranding network investigators from a range of countries gathered for two days of information sharing and discussion, focusing on unusual large scale mortality events, mass strandings and disease outbreaks.

The primary aim of the workshop was to facilitate international collaboration and coordination across existing national and regional strandings programmes.  The group of experts discussed causes, responses and mitigation activities, identified common issues and discussed potential solutions.  Other key considerations were international data sharing and provision of mutual aid, particularly for mass strandings and large mortality events where local capacity could find itself stretched.

A workshop report containing the discussions and conclusions of the workshop will be available here shortly.
