CMP Working Group Report Published

The IWC Standing Working Group on Conservation Management Plans (CMPs) has reported on its meeting, held in Brisbane, Australia.  The report is available here.

CMPs were introduced by the IWC to improve conservation outcomes for the world's most at-risk cetacean populations.  They are tailored, flexible tools which enable targeted management of human activities.  At the Brisbane meeting, the working group assessed the three current Plans and considered both proposed and potential future Plans.

The CMP initiative spans the globe.  The group received updates on plans to minimise threats to two South American populations of southern right whale, and gray whales in the North Pacific.  Potential future initiatives under discussion ranged from harbour porpoises in the North Sea to Arabian humpbacks and cetacean populations in the South Pacific.

Collaboration underpins the CMP concept.  The Plans are designed to complement existing international conventions and agreements, national legislation and management regimes in participating states.  Participants at the Brisbane meeting emphasised the importance of cooperation and partnership, and committed to a programme of engagement with other stakeholders at regional, national and international levels.
