Whale Song Library and Satellite Tagging Guidelines amongst wide-ranging recommendations of the 2019 Scientific Committee

The annual report of the IWC Scientific Committee is published today.  The document contains a series of wide-ranging recommendations and summary of discussions during a two-week meeting of nearly 150 of the world’s leading cetacean scientists, held in Nairobi, Kenya in May.

Collaboration at the heart of the first Bycatch Mitigation Initiative workshop

The first workshop of the IWC Bycatch Mitigation Initiative (BMI) takes place in Kenya this week. Aiming to raise awareness of the need for action on cetacean bycatch, and to promote effective tools to understand and tackle the issue, the BMI concept was endorsed by the Commission in 2016. 

IWC Workshop: Understanding Small Cetacean Catches

The third and final workshop takes place in Nairobi this week, in a series focused on poorly documented takes of small cetaceans.  In some parts of the world, small cetaceans are caught for food, bait, trade or use in traditional customs.  Some are thought to be at unsustainable levels for the populations concerned, and so the IWC has a work programme in place to better understand these catches.
