The IWC started to consider the possible implications of climate change for cetaceans in the early 1990s and has subsequently held four workshops in 1996, 2010, 2011 (focused on potential impacts of climate change on small cetaceans) and in 2014. A further workshop will be held in December 2021. The reports of all the previous workshops are available on the IWC website.
The 2021 workshop will review the latest information about the implications of climate change for all cetacean species, based on observed and predicted effects, and this will help to define and develop the role of the IWC in helping to address this issue. The event will be live-streamed on the IWC YouTube channel for those unable to attend.
